Lee feted in Taiwan

Helmer has a day named in his honor

TAIPEI — Ang Lee, who won an Oscar for “Brokeback Mountain,” was Tuesday given a medal by Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian. Awarding the Order of the Brilliant Star, Chen said that Lee was “the light of Taiwan and all Chinese people and the pride of Asia.”

Chen also congratulated Lee on being named one of the world’s top 100 most influential people by Time magazine.

Now a U.S. citizen, Lee earlier returned to Tainan, the town of his birth, where Friday was declared “Ang Lee Day.”
