Atlab taps Johnson to top digital effort

Exec will review financing, digital system design

SYDNEY — Australia’s leading film supply shingle, Atlab, has tapped former Hoyts Cinemas boss Paul Johnson to coordinate development of digital cinema.

Johnson will be responsible for reviewing financing, digital system design and working with the majors on Atlab’s new direction.

Atlab handles most release prints in Oz, and its technology division is a leading player in the rollout of DCI-compliant digital cinema installations. It also supplies its own system for e-cinema pre-show and alternative content.

Johnson worked with Hoyts for 25 years before ankling earlier this year as CEO.

Atlab is owned by Amalgamated Holdings, parent company of Hoyts’ key competitor Greater Union Cinemas and a major shareholder of Village Roadshow Entertainment.
