Sydney Theater kudos laud Edwards

O'Connor, Field take top acting prizes

The Sydney Theater Awards were reinstated Monday after a 10-year absence, with Gale Edwards taking director honors for the Sydney Theater Company production of “Festen.”

Caroline O’Connor’s portrayal of Judy Garland in “End of the Rainbow” won her lead actress kudos, while David Field took the male gong for “View From a Bridge.” Both were produced by Ensemble.

“The Producers” garnered supporting thesp trophies for Tony Sheldon and Chloe Dallimore. This pair won the same categories at the national Helpmann Awards in late 2005.

Stephen Sewell’s “Three Furies,” staged within the 2005 Sydney Festival and helmed by Jim Sharman, was declared best mainstream show and new work. “Unspoken” claimed indie title.

With only a handful of voters — mostly newspaper crix — the Sydney Theater Awards have some way to go before gaining legitimacy.
