'Elizabeth Rex' takes home 3 awards

The Center Theater Group’s production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” took home five trophies at the 2006 L.A. Stage Alliance Ovation Awards, including best musical, large theatre. Honors for best play went to “Zero Hour.”

Garnering three awards was the Open at the Top Prods.’ staging of “Elizabeth Rex.”

Other multiple winners with two each were: the Geffen Playhouse revival of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons,” including lead actress in a play honors to Laurie Metcalf; “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” (Fountain Theater) and “Ubu Roi,” produced by Glendale-based A Noise Within.

“Drowsy Chaperone,” which premiered at the Ahmanson and went on to win five Tonys, nabbed wins for lead actor and actress in a musical for Bob Martin and Sutton Foster, respectively.

In total, downtown-based Center Theater Group accumulated eight awards divided between the Mark Taper Forum and Ahmanson.

The Career Achievement Award went to composer Jerry Herman.

“Zero Hour” (West Coast Jewish Theater) is Jim Brochu’s one-person perusal of the life and career of Zero Mostel. “The Breakup Notebook” (L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center) was written by Patricia Cotter and Lori Scarlett.

The event, held Monday at downtown’s Orpheum Theater, was emceed by Neil Patrick Harris. Ovations are handed out by L.A. Stage Alliance, formerly Theater L.A., a nonprofit association of theaters, performing arts orgs and producers in the greater Los Angeles area.
