‘High’ headed to Ahmanson

Gordy tuner features 30 Motown songs

“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” a Motown musical created by the soul label’s founder, Berry Gordy, will have its world premiere at the Ahmanson in the summer of 2007.

Tuner, with a book by Gordy and 30 Motown tunes, is slated to close the 2006-07 season, which will include Tony winners “Doubt” and “The Light in the Piazza” and Matthew Bourne’s take on “Edward Scissorhands.”

“Ain’t No Mountain,” produced by Center Theater Group, will open July 15. It focues on a story of young love, the search for self-identity and the urge to rebel, set to a host of classics from the Detroit label.

Cherry Jones will reprise her Tony-winning turn in John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt” at the Ahmanson Sept. 27-Oct. 29. “Doubt” also is included in the CTG/Mark Taper Forum 2006-07 subscription season. More productions in the Taper’s season will be announced shortly.

“The Light in the Piazza,” the musical with book by Craig Lucas, music and lyrics by Adam Guettel and direction by Bartlett Sher, will be presented Nov. 1-Dec. 10. “Piazza,” winner of six Tony Awards in 2005, has not been cast.

Bourne’s dance-theater piece “Edward Scissorhands,” based on the film by Tim Burton, will be a bonus holiday offering, running Dec. 13-31. Music is composed, arranged and adapted by Terry Davies, based on the original motion picture score by Danny Elfman; Bourne devised, directed and choreographed.

Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin will star in Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” running Feb. 6-March 18. Anthony Page directs.

Richard Thomas will star as the lone holdout on the jury and George Wendt will star as the jury foreman in “Twelve Angry Men” March 29-May 6, 2007. Scott Ellis is the director.

Tickets for the Ahmanson Theatre’s 40th season are currently available by subscription only. Single tickets will be on sale to the general public in early September.
