“Gutenberg! The Musical!” will open the book on a commercial Off Broadway run this fall. A recent alum of the New York Musical Theater Fest, the comic tuner will play a six-week engagement at 59E59 Theaters beginning previews Nov. 21.
Christopher Fitzgerald (“Wicked”) and Jeremy Shamos (“The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)”) star in the two-hander as legit creatives at a backers’ audition, pitching a musical about Johannes Gutenberg and the printing press.
Fitzgerald and Shamos played the roles in the show’s September incarnation at New York Musical Theater Fest, where the tuner picked up awards for book writing and acting.
Earlier versions of “Gutenberg” have starred the tuner’s creators, Anthony King and Scott Brown, who performed a limited run of the show in London in January.
The British producer of the U.K. version, Trevor Brown, also is backing the Gotham run, along with fellow producers Ron Kastner, Terry Allen Kramer and Joseph Smith.
Alex Timbers, a.d. of downtown troupe Les Freres Corbusier (“Hell House”), helms “Gutenberg.” Show opens Dec. 3 and plays through Dec. 31.
