The daylight-saving clock change caused its usual decline in Broadway sales last week, with the Oct. 29 switchover spurring B.O. dips for most shows during Week 23 (Oct. 30-Nov. 5). Total receipts for 31 shows were $17,372,991, down about $350,000 from the prior sesh.
Legiters don’t know exactly why the time change adversely affects grosses, but, like clockwork, it happens every year.
“Les Miserables” saw the biggest dip of the week, sliding more than $135,000 in its second frame. Diminished returns could suggest flagging interest in the revival just three years after the original long-runner closed.
Producer Cameron Mackintosh’s other new Rialto show, his co-production with Disney Theatrical of “Mary Poppins,” climbed in its first seven-perf week.
Seeing drops of more than $100,000 each were “The Drowsy Chaperone,” “The Color Purple,” and “Spamalot.”
Meanwhile, “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” climbed nearly $220,000 in its second week on the boards, with 11 perfs. Will sales continue to rise as the titular holiday approaches?
It was too soon for the raves won by lead thesp Christine Ebersole to register at the box office for “Grey Gardens,” which dipped in its comp-heavy opening week.
“The Producers” fell below $500,000 again, and “The Wedding Singer,” which recently announced it would close at the end of the year, sank by around $120,000.
The critically battered “The Times They Are A-Changin’ ” held steady, while “Butley” climbed a bit.
Joining the fray was “Company,” playing to 70% capacity in its first week of perfs.
The 25 musicals grossed $16,014,416 for 92.2% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 210,125 at 77.3% capacity.
The six plays grossed $1,358,575 for 7.8% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 26,068 at 68.0% capacity.
Average paid admission was $76.21 for musicals, $52.12 for plays and $73.55 for all shows.
