Benedict joins Variety

Bloomberg vet will report from the U.K.

David Benedict will debut next month as the new Variety correspondent for U.K. theater and pop culture. He will write a regular column, review theater and report on legit and the arts.

He was most recently London legit critic and deputy arts editor for Bloomberg News; before that, he was arts editor at the Observer and worked at the Independent from 1993 to 2000, serving as arts columnist and critic, becoming associate arts editor and theater editor.

As a freelancer, he has written for the Financial Times, the Guardian, Evening Standard, the Times, Esquire, New Statesman and Elle.

Benedict, a regular guest on BBC2’s flagship arts program “The Culture Show,” also broadcasts on BBC Radio 4 on film and on BBC Radio 3 on classical music and musicals.

Aside from his writing talents, he has worked as an actor, theater director, documaker and currently sings bass with the London chamber choir Coro.
