Disney Theatrical Australia has confirmed it will send the Oz production of “The Lion King” on the road to Asia when the Melbourne season ends June 4.
Destinations will be confirmed in February, but Beijing or Shanghai are expected to be among the dates.
By the time the season wraps in Oz, some 2.2 million people, one in every nine Australians, will have seen the show.
Tuner, which will have played more 1,000 performances, opened in Sydney in October 2003, then Melbourne in July 2005.
According to Disney, the production has played to full capacity at Sydney’s 2,035-seat Capitol Theater and Melbourne’s 2,108-seat Regent.
“The Lion King” collected four Helpmann Awards in 2004, including one for musical.
