Abbey bows ‘Kicking a Dead Horse’

Rea to star in Shepard production

Dublin’s Abbey Theater has scored the world preem of “Kicking a Dead Horse,” written and directed by Sam Shepard.

Irish thesp Stephen Rea, who last appeared at the Abbey in 1989, will star. The theater offered no details about the plot of the new play, which opens March 15.

Abbey director Fiach Mac Conghail has been cultivating a relationship with Shepard recently. The theater staged a production of Shepard’s “True West” last year.

“Dead Horse” joins a winter/spring season that includes “A Number,” the Caryl Churchill play in which Shepard starred during a 2004 run Off Broadway, and the world preem of “Terminus,” a new play written and directed by Mark O’Rowe (“Howie the Rookie”). Season also includes revivals of “Julius Caesar” and “The Crucible.”
