AMC to settle handicap suit

Exhib chain will improve wheelchair seating

AMC Entertainment will pay $300,000 to settle a U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit claiming the company’s “stadium-style” movie theaters failed to provide adequate seating for people using wheelchairs.

AMC, the movie theater operator that plans to combine with Loews Cineplex Entertainment Corp., will improve seating for people using wheelchairs at 1,200 of AMC’s 1,933 stadium theaters, the Justice Department said in an e-mailed statement Wednesday. The settlement requires the company to pay $300,000 in penalties and damages to people who notified the Justice Department of the problem.
