‘Volver’ to open Vancouver fest

Full slate to be announced on Sept. 6

The 25th Vancouver Film Festival will open its 16-day run on Sept. 28 with Pedro Almodovar’s “Volver.”

The Spanish-language pic preemed at Cannes this year and will be centerpiece film at the New York Film Festival, which opens a day after Vancouver.

Set in Almodovar’s hometown of La Mancha, dramedy stars Penelope Cruz. It will be released later in the fall in Canada by Mongrel Media.

Lineup also includes Jacques Rivette’s “Out 1: Spectre,” a five-hour cut of his 1971 French-language mystery “Out 1: Noli me tangere,” originally 12½ hours long.

Latter pic, rarely seen even in France, will screen over two days in eight episodes at fest’s new home at the VanCity theater after the event wraps.

Festival director Alan Franey will announce the full slate on Sept. 6.
