Helmer Vincenzo Marra’s “L’Udienza e aperta” (The Trial Begins) will be the 13th pic in the Venice Film Festival sidebar Venice Days, organizers said Monday.
Marra’s documentary, which looks at justice and the Neapolitan Mafia through the testimony of a local judge, is the second Italo entry on the list.
As part of its campaign to promote Euro pics outside their country of origin, the Europa Cinemas network will bestow its third Label award for European feature in the Venice Days section.
Winner will receive extended theatrical exposure and promotional support. Technicolor will provide the winner with five bonus prints to encourage the widest possible distribution in Italy.
Honor complements the Labels awarded at Cannes’ Directors Fortnight, Berlin’s Panorama section and the Karlovy Vary fest.
The Europa Cinemas network covers 664 cinemas in 59 countries and aims to increase the visibility of Euro pics and foster initiatives to get younger auds interested in European cinema.
First-time helmers in the Venice Days sidebar also will be eligible for the fest’s Lion of the Future, worth E100,000 ($129,000).
Venice fest runs Aug. 30-Sept. 9.
