Spanish thesp Maria Valverde, who played the teen temptress in the Sony-backed Italian hit “Melissa P.,” will take the femme lede in “The Sandman,” a psychiatric-ward-set romancer from first-time Spanish director Jose Manuel Gonzalez.
Portugal’s Joaquin de Almeida and Spain’s Irene Visedo are also set for the pic, Sanchez said at Berlin.
Rolling late summer, pic is produced by Harold Sanchez’s Iroko and Siete Sillas in Spain, and Judith Freixas’ Red (E) Films in France.
Told in extended flashback, “Sandman” turns on a love story between a femme patient of the psychatric ward (Valverde) and a tramp. Visedo plays the film’s narrator, Almeida the tramp’s friend.
Iroko’s credits include the Madrid Cuban mafia caper “A King in Havana,” which grossed $1.9 million in Spain.
