U scoops up thriller pitch

Camp, Thompson script to be produced by Stuber/Parent banner

In a deal worth high-six against seven figures, Universal Pictures has preemptively acquired an untitled pitch by screenwriters Brandon Camp and Mike Thompson (“Dragonfly”).

A supernatural thriller about a woman who moves to a small town and has to deal with her past, the film will be produced by Scott Stuber and Mary Parent through their U-based Stuber/Parent banner. Camp and Thompson will exec produce.

Stuber and Parent had the inside track on the material because they are working with the writers on “Traveling,” a picture Camp will direct, with Thompson producing along with Stuber and Parent.

“Traveling” is about a Dr. Phil-like self-improvement guru who can’t escape the rut he’s been in since his wife’s death.

Camp will cast the film before Stuber and Parent decide whether to set it at their home base at Universal, or with independent financing. Camp and Thompson will write the U pitch while Stuber and Parent prep “Traveling” for production.

Scribes are best known for writing “Steinbeck’s Point of View,” which Camp was to direct. When Tom Cruise circled, Camp was asked by Warner Bros. and Bel Air to step aside as director. Duo’s spec script deal was re-drawn from $750,000 upfront to a $4 million package (factoring in a pair of blind script commitments worth $1 million each) in 1998. Cruise bailed and the film never got made, but the guys got paid.

Producer Mark Johnson is now working to put “Steinbeck’s Point of View” together with Camp and Thompson.

The writers are repped by ICM.
