Supporting actress Sandra Bullock

Hollywood Awards honoree

An established leading lady who excels equally in comedic and dramatic roles, Bullock will play supporting roles as well, as she did in “Crash” and does again in “Infamous.”

Like last year’s “Capote,” “Infamous” tells the story of how Truman Capote came to write his masterwork “In Cold Blood” and was destroyed by it. Bullock plays Capote’s childhood friend Nelle Harper Lee.

Whether playing an arrogant, uptight wife in “Crash” or a wise, unglamorous writer, Bullock extends the same commitment as she did in her starring vehicles “Speed” and “Miss Congeniality.”

“I look at everything I do as a character part,” she explains.

To play the living author whose one book, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” ensured her legacy as surely as “In Cold Blood” did Capote’s, Bullock might have been expected to talk with the publicity-shy, reclusive Lee.

“I never met Harper Lee, nor would I ever (want to), because of the choice she made to live out of the public eye,” says the actress. (Catherine Keener, who plays Lee in “Capote,” tried and was rejected.)

Fortunately, Bullock has family who live near Lee’s home in Monroeville, Ala., which helped: “I was able to talk to people who knew her.”
