Supporting actor Ben Affleck

Hollywood Awards honoree

Affleck isn’t calling it a comeback — “I never use the ‘C’ word,” he says – but how sweet it is. Playing a murdered or suicidal Superman in “Hollywoodland,” Affleck gives a perf that made him a surprise winner at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Like so many recent award-winners before him, he gained lots of weight — 20 pounds, to be exact — to emphasize the booze-fueled self-disgust of an actor who did not want to be known as a kiddie TV star in tights. All of which begs the obvious question, which Affleck politely answers:

“There are things I understand about George Reeves’ life because of the life I’ve lived — and some things (came) through research. I had a responsibility because he was a real person who had a lot of pain and had his image exploited. I didn’t want this to be a further exhuming of his likeness for our own careers. I think of George as a guy who never got a fair shake. So I thought it would be the least that we give him his fair shake here.”

Regarding his own recent hiatus, Affleck offers, “I wanted to sort of take a break and keep things quiet, and I kind of made a decision to just do the kind of movies that I wanted. I got really lucky that the first movie I did was this one. It feels great.”
