Starz shines on fest

Feevee engineers multiyear sponsorship deal

John Malone’s Starz Entertainment Group has signed on to a multiyear sponsorship of the annual Hollywood Film Festival.

David Charmatz, senior VP of channel management for Starz, said the deal is consistent with Starz’s push to support film fests around the country.

The 10th annual Hollywood Film Festival kicks off Oct. 17 at the ArcLight Cinemas. Its seven-day schedule includes screenings and special presentations of more than 100 movies, with Q&As featuring many of the filmmakers.

Starz is not only the presenting sponsor of the fest, but it will host the closing-night Hollywood Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Oct. 23. The awards go to established talent, international talent and emerging moviemakers. Last year’s winners included George Lucas, Paul Haggis, Jake Gyllenhaal, Joaquin Phoenix, Charlize Theron and the cast of “Crash.”

Starz will allow the festival to premiere “Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride: Hunter S. Thompson on Film,” a documentary it commissioned on the late gonzo journalist, featuring interviews with such Thompson friends as Johnny Depp, Bill Murray, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro.

The festival’s exec director is Carlos de Abreu.
