Stadlober to play Austrian pop icon

MR Film, Constantin prep Falco biopic

BERLIN — Robert Stadlober, who starred in Marco Kreuzpaintner’s hit film “Summer Storm,” will portray late 1980s pop star Falco in an upcoming Austrian-German co-production from Vienna-based MR Film and Munich’s Constantin Film.

Austrian Thomas Roth will helm the pic from his own script, which chronicles the life of the classical music prodigy turned Austrian pop star.

Born Johann Hoelzel, Falco enjoyed such decade-defining hits as “Rock Me Amadeus” and “Der Kommissar,” and remains a legend in his native country. Falco died in a car accident in 1998.

Stadlober, a fellow Austrian and musician, is currently shooting Kreuzpaintner’s fantasy epic “Krabat,” starring Daniel Bruehl (“A Friend of Mine”), David Kross (“Tough Enough”) and Hanno Koffler (“The Red Baron”).
