The New York Times and Gotham-based digital cinema distributor Emerging Pictures have teamed up for an eight-month film series, showcasing pics from Indiewire’s annual Undiscovered Gems list.
List features Indiewire’s top 15 pics from the festival circuit that have yet to find a theatrical release. In association with San Rafael’s California Film Institute, the series will bring one film a month to theaters in 11 cities nationwide, including New York; San Rafael; Tucson, Ariz.; Wilmington, Del.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.
Series will culminate in an audience nod, based on balloting at each venue, to be announced in December. In conjunction with the Sundance Channel, the winning filmmaker will receive a $50,000 cash award; theatrical release in New York, Los Angeles and at least five other U.S. cities through 2007; and an airing on Sundance Channel. Kudofest will be held in Gotham and at the California Film Institute.
Series will kick off in late April with helmer Jem Cohen’s “Chain,” a story of two women adrift within the increasingly homogenized landscapes of the modern world.
