Spanish release date for ‘Volver’

Laffer to bow on March 17

Pedro Almodovar’s latest pic, femme comedy “Volver” starring Penelope Cruz and Carmen Maura, will bow March 17 in Spain, Pedro and Agustin Almodovar’s production house El Deseo announced Friday.

The March opening has sparked speculation that “Volver” will play at the Cannes Film Festival, following in the tracks of Almodovar’s “All About My Mother” (which won director honors there in 1999) and “Bad Education,” which opened Cannes in 2004.

Sony Pictures Classics, Almodovar’s U.S. distributor, has firmed up June 23 as the U.S. release date for “Volver.” The release reps a novel attempt by SPC to score a summer hit with a subtitled pic.
