The Screen Producers Assn. of Australia confab is moving from its usual August date to Nov. 14-17 to link with the Independent Film Awards, which are moving from Sydney to Queensland’s Gold Coast.
Move comes at the request of sponsor the Queensland government.
SPAA topper Geoff Brown said positioning SPAA after AFM and before Thanksgiving would help it attract more international guests.
For the last few years SPAA and Australia’s version of ShoWest, the Australian Movie Convention, have been held back-to-back in August. “We think the IFs and SPAA is a better fit,” Brown said.
The Independent Film Awards’ move from Sydney, where most of the film industry is based, will be a major test of the durability of the kudos, now in their eighth year.
