‘Sophie Scholl’ continues award streak

Pic nabs Oscar nom, previously took German and EFA kudos

Marc Rothemund’s World War II drama “Sophie Scholl: The Final Days” — the story of a young member of the student resistance group White Rose who is arrested and beheaded by the Gestapo — is the third nomination of a German film in the past four years.

Rothemund on Tuesday described the nomination as “a great honor and reward for everyone involved.” The pic’s “worldwide acceptance surpassed all of our hopes. We are all extremely happy, especially for the members of the White Rose who are still with us and for the deserved tribute to the Munich resistance.”

Last year the Academy nominated Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Adolf Hitler drama “Downfall,” but the pic went empty-handed on Oscar night.

In 2003 Caroline Link won the foreign-lingo Oscar for “Nowhere in Africa,” a film also set during the Nazi era.

Pic has been sweeping award ceremonies since it preemed at the Berlin Intl. Film Festival last February.

In addition to Silver Bears for Rothemund and actress Judy Jentsch, pic won top awards and the German and European Film Awards.
