Searchlight hits teen scene

'Office' worker Kaling scores with pitch

Mindy Kaling has sold a pitch to Fox Searchlight’s new teen division, marking the company’s first purchase. Howard Klein will produce.

Comedy is set in the world of college sororities.

Kaling is a staff writer and performer on NBC’s hit reality-spoof “The Office,” based on Ricky Gervais’ BBC version. On the show, she plays Kelly Kapoor, a ditsy sales worker who’s in love with the office temp. Fresh out of Dartmouth, she also wrote the hit Off Broadway play “Matt and Ben,” a spoof on thesps Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Klein is a producer on “The Office” as well as “King of the Hill” and HBO’s “Carnivale.”

Fox’s teen division, unveiled late last year, is led by Fox Searchlight prexy Peter Rice and John Hegeman, who was brought on as chief operating officer.
