Hernan Musaluppi’s Buenos Aires-based Rizoma is teaming with Fernando Epstein’s Control-Z to produce the next film by Uruguay’s Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll, partners in Control-Z, based in Montevideo.
Rebella and Stoll are writing the screenplay, Musaluppi said at Berlin, where he’s tubthumping his latest production, Competition player “El Custodio.”
Co-produced by Control-Z and Rizoma, Rebella and Stoll’s deb “Whisky” took the Regard Original jury prize and FIPRESCI critics kudos at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard in 2004.
Rizoma and Control-Z also co-produced the recent Rotterdam Tiger winner, “The Dog Pound.”
Musaluppi dubs the alliance “a mutual affection pact,” an effective first co-production option in Argentina and Uruguay on each other’s projects.
Pact also reps a growing trend toward pan-Latin American co-prods.
“State regulation ensuring industry standards has hiked local currency production costs,” said Musaluppi.
