Pic, about a young tearaway who achieves maturity through Zen drumming, lenses in Hong Kong and Taiwan next month. Cast is headed by “Election” and “Election 2” star Simon Yam and Lee Sin-je, in Cannes with out-of-competition chiller “Recycle.”

“Drummer” is a $2 million Hong Kong-Taiwan-Germany co-production with coin from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, its first support for a Chinese-language picture. Production companies are Bi’s Kenbiroli Films, Peggy Chiao’s Arc Light Films and Thanassis Karathanos’ Twenty Twenty Vision.

Match Factory is the international sales outfit established last year by Michael Weber, former prexy of Bavaria Film Intl. EMP will handle most Asian territories.
