Skedded sale skids to stop

The Leo McCarey Oscar statue scheduled to be auctioned off Aug. 19 has been deemed a fake.

The Oscar was said to be the 1944 director award for “Going My Way.”

Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences executive administrator Ric Robertson said the award was made up of two mismatched parts, neither a part of the authentic McCarey statuette.

Mastro Auctions, which skedded the sale, brought the Oscar to the Academy, which declared it a “high-quality counterfeit.” The Internet auction has been canceled.
