Martin will write, star in sci-fi laffer

Columbia Pictures has bought the comedy pitch “Moon People” for comic-scribe Demetri Martin and James Bobin (“Da Ali G Show”). The pair will co-write the pic for Martin to star in and Bobin to direct. Jimmy Miller is producing.

Story concerns a group of people who return to assimilate on Earth years after they were sent to colonize the moon.

Martin sold his pitch “Will” to DreamWorks earlier this year for Scot Armstrong (“Old School”) to exec produce. He’s written for “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” and “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” and his Comedy Central special “These Are Jokes” is being released on DVD.

Bobin is a writer and director of HBO comedy series “Da Ali G Show.”He’s also directing New Line’s “Jeff the Demon,” being produced by Radar Pictures.

Jimmy Miller and Sony are currently on a roll with “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” also produced by Judd Apatow. Miller, Apatow and Sony are reteaming with the “Talladega” stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly on “Step Brothers.”
