MK Pix joins China’s ‘Assembly’ line

$10 million pic set during the Chinese civil war

SEOUL — Korean distributor MK Pictures has pacted with China’s Huayi Bros. to co-produce “The Assembly,” an upcoming pic by Chinese director Feng Xiaogang. The deal was signed Thursday in Beijing.

On a trip to South Korea in September to promote his film “The Banquet” starring Ziyi Zhang, Feng expressed his wish to collaborate with the makers of the record-breaking Korean War film “Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War.”

KangJeGyu Films, which produced “Tae Guk Gi,” merged with Myung Films in early 2004 to create MK Pictures. MK has also been active in China’s exhibition sector, having pacted with the Poly Group to build a chain of multiplexes across the country.

“The Assembly,” budgeted at $10 million and set during the Chinese civil war, is scheduled to be complete by next fall.
