Mar del Plata sweetens film prize pot

Cannes Brief

Argentina’s Mar del Plata Film Festival is launching a Latin American film prize, with a cash award of around $50,000 provided by the festival.

Plaudit will be called the Golden Che, after revolutionary leader Che Guevara.

The prize was approved by FIAPF Intl. Federation of Film Producers Assn. here.

It will be given to the best film in a new competitive Latin America section to run parallel to Mar de Plata’s official competition, which is open to films from anywhere in the world, fest prexy Miguel Pereira announced Saturday.

Latin American features and feature-length documentaries are eligible for the award.

The move is part of Pereira’s push to strengthen the fest’s support for Latin-American film-making and to leverage local finance for Latin American films.

Fest already has a co-production market for Latin American films.

Mar del Plata, which runs March 8-18, is Latin America’s only FIAPF classified A-festival.
