Mandarin shows ‘Mercy’

New actioner reteams Yen with Wai-shun for third time

Hong Kong-based Mandarin Films has unveiled new Donnie Yen action vehicle “City With No Mercy.” Pic is the third collaboration between Yen and helmer Wilson Yip Wai-shun after hits “Dragon Tiger Gate” and “SPL.” Scripter is Szeto Kam-yuen, who previously penned “SPL.”

Pic is a Hong Kong-China co-production involving Mandarin and Beijing Poly Bona Film Distribution and is being put together on a budget of $8 million. Producers are Nansun Shi (“Infernal Affairs,” “Seven Swords”), Poly Bona’s Yui Dong and Yen.

Pic begins production this month (ed Nov) in Hong Kong, having previously been skedded to lense in nearby Macau. But the pic’s heavy demands on extras – one action scene requires no less than 250 – that production shifted back to Hong Kong. Delivery is pitched as mid-2007.

Besides Yen, pic also stars Louis Koo, Hollywood-based Collin Chou and Chinese actress Feng Bingbing. Yen also doubles as action choreographer.
