Late B.O. boost one for ‘Road’

'Glory' wins weekend over 'Hoodwinked' by $48,000

At the end of a see-saw Martin Luther King Day Jr. weekend, “Glory Road” has emerged the winner by a miniscule $48,000 over “Hoodwinked.”

Disney’s historical sports drama was a solid No. 1 as of Sunday, based on three-day estimates, but in four-day estimates released Monday, the Weinstein Co.’s toon pulled ahead based on the presumed strength of Monday matinees.

However, when actual figures for the four-day frame came in Tuesday, it turned out Weinstein Co. didn’t quite manage its first No. 1 release. Both pics were up slightly from their Monday estimate, but “Glory Road” rose more, grossing $16,927,589 over four days compared with “Hoodwinked’s” $16,879,402.

Weinstein Co. can still be pleased, though, as its low-budget animated feature came in well ahead of expectations and proved a CG toon without Pixar-size production values or marketing spend can succeed on its own scale.

But the brothers Weinstein will have to wait for another weekend when they can finally boast of a head-to-head victory over their former employers.
