‘Lassie’ calls Toronto home

Ninth Sprockets runs April 21-30

Lassie is coming home, to Toronto that is.

The 11th film in the venerable franchise based on Eric Knight’s children’s classic, “Lassie” will have its North American premiere at the opening night of Sprockets, the Toronto Intl. Film Festival for Children.

“We are delighted to bring this wonderful story with such rich cinematic and literary history to Toronto,” said Jane Schoettle, the fest’s director.

Set in Yorkshire, England, on the eve of WWII, Lassie must find her way home in time for Christmas after being sold when the Carraclough family falls on hard times.

Directed by Charles Sturridge, “Lassie” stars Peter O’Toole, Samantha Morton and Peter Dinklage.

The most recent English-language Lassie film, “The Magic of Lassie,” unspooled in 1978.

The ninth Sprockets runs April 21-30 and is divided into two sections; the family program runs April 12-23 and April 28-30, and the school program April 24-28.
