Comedy appealing to a broad demographic

“Suite Dreams,” Koki Mitani’s intricately structured homage to the 1932 MGM classic “Grand Hotel,” topped the Japanese weekend B.O. chart with a take of Y560 million ($4.9 million) on 415,000 admissions.

Released on 280 screens by Toho on Saturday, the comedy appeals to a broad demographic centering on female auds in their twenties and thirties. Stars Joe Odagiri, Takako Matsu, Koji Yakusho and Koichi Sato are prime draws. Production company Fuji TV is repping the film internationally.

One of Japan’s leading scriptwriters, with a long list of TV and screen credits, Mitani made his directing debut in 1997 with “Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald.”
