Italo film lures in Lionsgate

Studio nabs distrib rights for Oscar entry

Lionsgate has bought U.S. distrib rights to Italian Oscar entry “La bestia nel cuore” (“Don’t Tell”), directed by Cristina Comencini and based on her bestselling novel of the same name. Incest drama stars Giovanna Mezzogiorno.

Film, from a screenplay penned by Comencini, Francesca Marciano and Giulia Calenda, concerns an Italian woman whose adult life is shattered when troubling childhood memories surface. Fleeing to her brother’s in America, she realizes he too was traumatized.

Produced by Cattleya and Rai Cinema, “Don’t Tell” grossed more than $7 million at the Italian box office last fall after preeming at the Venice Film Festival, where Mezzogiorno picked up the Volpi Cup prize for female performance.

Pic also stars Luigi Lo Cascio, Alessio Boni, Stefania Rocca, Angela Finocchiaro and Giuseppe Battiston.
