Rock band demands apology from Wilson
Steely Dan sought an apology. Owen Wilson didn’t deliver one.Bandleaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen posted an open letter on their Web site last week, asking Wilson’s brother Luke to speak to Owen to get him to attend Steely Dan’s concert in Orange County. Becker and Fagen felt Owen Wilson’s character in his latest pic was ripped from their song “Cousin Dupree,” which details a layabout who sleeps on his aunt’s couch and has a growing infatuation with his cousin. They felt Wilson had borrowed that characterization for the film “You, Me and Dupree” and requested the thesp appear onstage and apologize. In return, Becker and Fagen would call off the lawyers and hit man and provide Wilson with plenty of Steely Dan merchandise. Alas, neither of the Wilson brothers attended the show. “What we suspect,” the Dan leaders wrote, “is some hack writer or producer or whatever they call themselves in Malibu or Los Feliz apparently heard our Grammy-winning song ‘Cousin Dupree’ on the radio and thought, Hey, man, this is a cool idea for a character in a movie or something.” The letter, reading like something one would find on the Onion Web site, continues, “We’re like totally out in the cold on this one — no ASCAP, no soundtrack, no consultant gig … no phone call, no muffin basket, no flowers, nothing.” They also invited Owen to bring his bongos to jam with the band.
