Large-screen exhibitor Imax continues its march around the globe, inking deals to open Imax MPX screens in China and India.
It has pacted with Chinese property company Sailun Real Estate Development to open an MPX theater in 2008 as the anchor attraction in a new commercial retail and entertainment complex in Kunming, in the province of Yunnan.
Since Imax opened its Asian HQ in 2002, China has become its second-largest and fastest-growing market. There are six Imax theaters in China, and 19 will open by 2008.
And in the city of Ludhiana, India, real estate developer Aeren R. Enterprises will add a fourth MPX theater to its three-screen commitment inked in 2003.
The company credited a strong year for multiplex-based Imax theaters showing remastered Hollywood blockbusters in India for the deal.
Aeren R. Enterprises opened its first Imax theater in New Delhi in November to coincide with the release of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: The Imax Experience.”
India will have 11 Imax screens by the end of 2008.
