Hong Kong arthouse to shutter

Aud numbers have been dropping over the last decade

HONG KONG — Hong Kong will lose one of its two arthouse theaters at the end of November.

Cine-Art House’s lease with Sun Hung Kai Properties will not be renewed so that the property company can refurbish the building, which houses shops and restaurants.

“We are going to find another location, but it’s very difficult to find one like this,” said Chui Hin-wai, director and theater management department manager of Sil-Metropole Organization, which runs the two-screen Cine-Art House.

The cinema, the only one offering arthouse options on Hong Kong island, has been struggling to cover its operation costs in recent years.

Audience numbers have been going down over the past 10 years, Chui said.

Once Cine-Art closes its doors, Edko’s Broadway Cinematheque in the Yau Ma Tei district will be the only option for Hong Kong auds who wish to see nonmainstream pics.
