‘Heart’ beats at Rotterdam

Fest fetes Japanese helmer with retrospective

ROTTERDAM — Japanese lenser Nagasaki Shunichi’s 2005 pic “Heart, Beating in the Dark” will have its European preem Jan. 25 as the opener of the Rotterdam Film Festival.

Helmer also is being honored with a retrospective at the event’s 35th edition, which runs 12 days.

“Heart, Beating in the Dark” is a reversion, a sequel and a docu of the 1982 underground classic, with principal actors from that pic returning to the 2005 version alongside a new cast.

Rotterdam is the first major fest outside Japan to devote a retrospective to Nagasaki, with 13 of his pics, including the original “Heart, Beating in the Dark,” “The Lonely Hearts Club Band in September” and “The Enchantment,” in the lineup.
