HBO teams with trio on docu

Moving Picture, First Take, Distant Horizon join cabler for Pearl story

HBO Documentary Films has teamed with Moving Picture Company, First Take, and Distant Horizon to produce “The Journalist and the Jihadi: The Murder of Daniel Pearl,” a feature docu on the reporter’s death in 2002.

Narrated by journalist Christiane Amanpour, the film traces the parallel lives of Pearl and the man who was ultimately convicted of killing him, jihadi Omar Sheikh. Pearl was taken captive in Pakistan soon after 9/11 when retracing the steps of “shoe bomber” Richard Reid, and was later murdered despite international condemnation.

Docu will debut on HBO in the fall, to coincide with Pearl’s birthday.

Pic is helmed and produced by Ahmed A. Jamal and Ramesh Sharma. Anant Singh from Distant Horizon also produces, alongside Indian production company Moving Picture, and Blighty based First Take. Sheila Nevins and Lisa Heller exec produce for HBO.
