Gov. fills commish slots

Schwarzenegger reups 4 for CFC

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has reupped showbiz pals Danny DeVito, Bill Duke, Clint Eastwood and Tom Werner to two-year slots on the 13-member California Film Commission.

In a Thursday announcement, the Governator also reappointed panel member Joe Hartwick, Fox’s prez of physical production, and tapped five new commission members: Fresno mayor and former thesp Alan Autry, producer Stanley Mark Brooks, IATSE VP Michael Miller, producer Al Ruddy (“Million Dollar Baby”) and Sony exec VP Keith Weaver.

Autry, Eastwood and Ruddy are Republicans; Brooks, DeVito, Duke, Hartwick, Miller and Weaver are Democrats; Werner is a decline-to-state.

In announcing the appointments, which do not require legislative confirmation, Schwarzenegger said the panel members have the expertise to promote filming in California.

Despite Schwarzenegger’s star power, he’s been unable to convince the legislature during his three years in office to enact anti-runaway production legislation. He announced in January that he wanted California lawmakers to enact $75 million of annual incentives to keep production in the state, fulfilling a promise to endorse runaway legislation in the budget after the most recent incentive bill stalled amid opposition from watchdog groups.

Additionally, the 21-year-old commission has been limited since 2003 to mostly a bare-bones permitting operation. Headquartered in Hollywood, the commission operates with a current annual budget of $800,000 and a staff of seven.
