Fortress sweet on ‘Syrup’

Shingle options Barry's satirical tome

Fortress Entertainment has optioned bestselling author Max Barry’s novel “Syrup,” which he’ll adapt for the bigscreen.

Satirical book tells the story of Scat, a twentysomething slacker who gets a million-dollar idea for a new soda. But first he has to deal with a street-smart, mini skirt-wearing corporate assassin, who may be the love of Scat’s life or just ripping off his idea off.

Brett Forbes and Patrick Rizzotti of Fortress will produce, with VP Mike Gozzard overseeing development for the shingle.

Barry’s first novel, “Jennifer Government,” is being developed by George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh’s Section Eight. His latest novel, “Company,” was recently published by Doubleday.

Fortress is producing Lionsgate’s “P.D.R.,” written by Michael Smith and Michael Gozzard, as well as “The Road Back,” starring Chris Cooper.
