Foreign-sales unit takes pic to AFM

Focus has pacted to rep all foreign rights to Fernando Meirelles-helmed drama “Blindness.”

Company’s foreign-sales team, led by international sales and distribution prexy Alison Thompson, will be selling international rights at AFM. Film does not yet have a U.S. distrib deal.

“Blindness” is based on the haunting fable by Portuguese novelist and Nobel Prize winner Jose Saramago; it concerns the social breakdown that occurs after much of the population in a European city is inexplicably stricken with blindness and placed into quarantine.

The U.K.’s Potboiler Prods., which produced Focus hit “The Constant Gardener”; Canadian shingle Rhombus Media; Japan’s Bee Vine Pictures; and Brazil’s 02 Filmes, Meirelles’ own shingle, are all aboard to produce. Production is set to begin in the summer.

Focus, which is very active in the foreign sales market, will be selling a slew of pics at AFM, including movies from Michel Gondry, David Cronenberg and Zhang Yimou.
