Henry Winterstein’s production, distribution and international sales company First Look Studios has taken North American distribution rights to Daniel Monzon’s English-language psychological thriller “The Kovak Box.”
Produced by Barcelona’s Castelao Prods. and Estudios Picasso, the production arms of Julio Fernandez’s Filmax Entertainment and Spanish broadcaster Telecinco, “Kovak Box” was one of the Spanish standouts at October’s Sitges Film Festival of Catalonia, where it world preemed.
“Kovak” turns on a bestselling novelist (Timothy Hutton) whose g.f. commits suicide after receiving a call. Her death recalls the plot from his first novel.
David Kelly plays a deranged scientist and admirer of the novelist’s work.
Deal is one of the first North American buys for First Look since it closed a three-year, $80 million credit line with Merrill Lynch in June.
“Kovak Box” is one of the latest in a line of English-language psychological thrillers from Filmax that includes Jaume Balaguero’s chillers “Darkness” and “Fragile” and Brad Anderson’s “The Machinist” and “Trans-Siberian,” in pre-production.
