Helmer feted with retrospect
BARCELONA — Filmmaker Gus Van Sant will receive a retrospective tribute at Spain’s eighth Las Palmas Film Festival, which runs March 16-24.Tribute is part of an ongoing fest focus, Novisimos USA, now in its second year, on the latest generation of U.S. indie helmers. Further sidebars in an extensive selection include a panorama of contempo Moroccan cinema (from 2000 to the present) and an homage to Israeli docu auteur Avi Mograbi (“August: A Moment Before the Eruption,” “Avenge but One of My Two Eyes”) whose work plumbs the complexities of modern Israel. An up-and-coming fixture on Spain’s film circuit, Las Palmas showcases pics that have difficulty breaking through to commercial distribution. The Canary Islands sprocket opera also will host Asia Noir, a retrospective of Asian contributions to film noir, and a Sam Peckinpah tribute. More details will be announced Tuesday at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
