Chinese helmer Feng Xiaogang plans to follow up his big-budget starrer “The Banquet” with “The Assembly,” a $10 million war film set during the Chinese Civil War.
Pic’s biggest star will be thesp Zhang Hanyu, who played a cop in Feng’s “A World Without Thieves,” said Huayi Brothers, who also jointly produced “The Banquet.”
The film is about a soldier trying to gain recognition for comrades who died in 1948, at a turning point in the civil war between the Communists and the Nationalist forces of the Kuomintang (KMT).
Production has started and is expected to be completed by March.
Feng is hugely popular in China with domestic hits such as “Big Shot’s Funeral” and “Cell Phone.” “The Banquet” was aimed at gaining a wider aud for the helmer and has been chosen to represent Hong Kong in the Oscar best foreign-language film category.
