Koki Mitani’s ensemble comedy “Suite Dreams” has crossed the Y5 billion ($42 million) mark at the Japanese B.O., out-grossing any domestic film released this year or in 2005.
By Friday the film, which Mitani scripted with inspiration from the MGM classic “Grand Hotel,” had earned $45.3 million on 4,110,000 admissions. This compares with $36.7 million for “Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation,” the highest grossing Japanese film released last year.
Mitani believes he has “discovered the secret for making hits” and vowed to beat “Spirited Away,” the 2001 Hayao Miyazaki animation that holds the all-time Japanese B.O. record with $260 million.
