Comics unite for laughs

Cosby, Carey, Cho, Cleese and others line up for fest

MONTREAL — Craig Ferguson, Jason Alexander, John Cleese, Margaret Cho, John Pinette, Bill Cosby and Drew Carey are among comics making the trek to Montreal for the 24th Just for Laughs comedy festival.

Lineup for the Canuck yukfest, which runs July 13-23, was unveiled at a press conference in Montreal on Tuesday.

Ferguson, Alexander and Cleese will host galas, the marquee shows at the festival; an all-Irish gala will be hosted by Ed Byrne and feature Tommy Tiernan.

Comics inked to perform at the galas include Carey, D.L. Hughley and the U.K.’s Jimmy Carr.

This year event will introduce the Flying Solo Series of one-man shows by Cho, Pinette, Cosby, Demetri Martin, Stewart Lee, Tim Minchin and Phil Nichol.

“The Aristocrats” co-director Paul Provenza is helming two one-man shows: Billy the Mime and the Nigerian Spam Scam Scam.

Sexy comedy show “La Clique,” which comes out of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, will make its North American preem at Just for Laughs.

As always, there are a slew of club shows. These include new entries the Asian Invasion, showcasing Asian comics, and the Comedy Showdown, where eight comics duke it out in an unconventional battle of wits.

Returning club shows include the Masters, New Faces, Late Nite Down Under, Britcom, Best of the Uptown Comics, the Nasty Show and Comedy Night in Canada.

The 10th Comedia fest, dedicated to comedy films, will also return, with programming details to be announced.
