Malkovich brings magic to 'Buck'

In a casting sleight of hand, John Malkovich has materialized in the role of a magician in “The Great Buck Howard,” the Sean McGinly-directed drama that co-stars Colin Hanks and Tom Hanks.

Bristol Bay Prods. is financing and Playtone’s Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman produce. Marvin Acuna and Steven Shareshian exec produce. McGinly wrote the script.

Kevin Kline had long been expected to play the role, but scheduling didn’t work out. Instead, Malkovich will play the famed magician on the downside of his career who takes on an eager assistant (Colin Hanks).

In a smaller role, Tom Hanks plays the father who is disappointed by his son’s choice of mentor.

Bristol Bay, part of the Anschutz Film Group, came aboard the film in March.

Malkovich next will be seen starring in “Eragon” for 20th Century Fox.
