Cablers get reprieve

Court had ordered Adult-rated pix be re-rated for cable

MUMBAI — Mumbai’s movie buffs are cheering a reversal in an August decision to censor all cable movies for foreign audiences.

The Central Board for Film Certification was unable to deal with the backlog created when a Mumbai high court ordered pics rated Adult (above 18) and U/A (parental guidance) to be re-rated for cable, satellite and direct-to-home platforms.

The Indian government plans to introduce stopgap measures that will allow cablers to broadcast movie channels including HBO, Star Movies, Sahara Filmy, Star Gold, AXN and SET Max without censorship.

Movie channels that showed adult fare throughout the day were yanked from cable and satellite homes after a police crackdown. Cablers in turn refused to transmit the movie channels within the city until the movies were re-rated.
